A cidade de Lisboa irá acolher, nos próximos dias 26 e 27 de Novembro de 2012, o Ecaterina Merica Cosmetic Education Programme , organizado pelaIFSCC (Internacional Federation of Societies of Cosmetic Chemists) com a colaboração da SPCC.

Este evento, dirigido aos membros da SPCC, abordará 2 interessantes temas:  Estratégias de Formulação para Perturbações Cutâneas e Estratégias Sensoriais em Formulação de Cosméticos.

 O Programa será desenvolvido em 2 dias (26 e 27 de Novembro de 2012), dividos por 2 Workshops com 6 horas de formação cada, num total de 12 horas de formação presencial.

Cada dia de formação terá um máximo de 6 horas de formação.

Workshop 1   
Formulation strategies for skin disequilibrium and troubled skin   [6 horas]

The most complicate issue for a formulator of cosmetics, is dealing with products dedicated to with sensitive skin. More than 50 % of the people think they have it, but indeed, only 10-15% is really affected by some type of skin disequilibrium. Worse in winter, trobled skin creates problems also in summer. Sensitive skin irritates easily under many types of environmental stress, sudden temperature changes and many chemicals. In these cases, the skin  barrier is reduced and irritant reactions take easily place when cosmetics are applied.

Cleansing requires delicate combined formulae, so to have a low irritation index, but the maximum care should be dedicated to the ease of rinse-off, the water quality and the use of cutaneous conditioners. Protein derivatives  and other anti-irritants can help to protect the skin structure.  Skin care strategies include complex treatments. In order to reduce itch, many hydrotropes, omoprotectants and hydrophilic polymers could be used. Anti-irritants can also be used, that generally derive from mineral or vegetal sources. Strengthening the skin barrier is mandatory: ceramides and sphingolipids with protecting vegetal sterols are a good combined option. The accurate selection of preservants fights against the rumors concerning the toxicity of many of the ‘official preservants’.

How to escape the jungle of ‘alternative preservants’ will be discussed. Finally, beware of purity! Skin behaves like a sponge and continuously applied impurities might easily sensitize delicate skinned consumers. Not only formulation, but also production cycles should also be carefully monitored.  Some examples of practical cases will be discussed, in order to create the background for a ‘cosmetic formula designer’ applied to troubled skin.

Also in the cosmetic market, effective communication requires sharing the same dictionary with the involved parts. The technology involved in the complex architecture of cosmetic formulation is required not only for assuring functionality, stability and safety but also to satisfy as much as possible the emotional and sensorial needs of the  consumers. In order to ‘communicate’ precisely with their senses, an adequate sensorial strategy must be adopted and applied to the ingredients’ choice and assembly. The evolution of perceptions before, during and after the application of a cosmetic onto the skin can be organised systematically during the development phases. The main fields of play, among many, concern the rheology and texture influencing ingredients, the hydrotropes equilibrium, the oil phase organization. Not to mention the correct identification of  perfumes and colour codes.
